Non-partisan, ideologically pluralistic space for journalists to immerse themselves in the study of core Jewish ideas and commitments, and to develop their own ideas.
The Shalom Hartman Institute is a leading center of Jewish thought and education, serving Israel and North America focused on Jewish peoplehood, identity, and pluralism; enhancing the Jewish and democratic character of Israel; and ensuring that Judaism is a compelling force for good in the 21st century.
We believe that the flourishing of democracy requires the open exchange of well-researched ideas, and that journalists and writers are among the most important interpreters and change-agents shaping how we understand our world today.
Jewish ideas matter, and the ways we interpret the unfolding world around us shapes the meaning of these moments for Jewish history.
The Shalom Hartman Institute of North America is excited to announce a new Seminar & Writers Workshop for Journalists providing a non-partisan, ideologically pluralistic space for journalists to immerse themselves in the study of core Jewish ideas and commitments, and to develop their own ideas more deeply. This effort seeks to elevate journalists as thought leaders by providing them with deep study and an intellectual community.
The inaugural cohort of journalists and writing professionals launched in September 2021.
The Seminar & Writers Workshop for Journalists combines intensive study of the nature, challenges, and possibilities of the Israel–Diaspora relationship during the academic year with a two-week summer residency at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.
The seminar also includes significant mentorship from the Institute’s research center and staff, as well as voices and personalities in the field of Jewish journalism and in Israeli society. Seminar participants have access to a wide variety of professional development resources and opportunities within the Hartman Institute, including mentorship, access to scholars, and time and space to write.
