Scholars Circle to conduct first Winter Conference

The Hartman Institute North American Scholars Circle is conducting its first annual Winter Conference the first week of January 2010, and a highlight is a special presentation by scholar and author Michael Walzer, titled, ‘The Anomalies of Jewish Identity.’

Rabbi Dr. Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmiis the Inaugural Senior Rabbi of Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom Congregation in Baltimore, MD. She is a well-known rabbi, speaker, author, teacher and institutional leader. Ordained at HUC-JIR in New York, Rabbi Sabath also earned a Ph.D. at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Deeply committed to pluralism, Rabbi Sabath has served congregations in the Reform movement, the Conservative movement and non-denominational synagogues including Shirat HaYam on Nantucket Island for over a decade. Walzer is Permanent Faculty Member, Emeritus of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and editor of The Jewish Political Tradition, a four-volume series in English done in collaboration with Hartman Institute scholars. A Hebrew translation was published by Shalom Hartman Institute.

The Scholars Circle also was celebrated at a reception during the recent annual conference of the American Jewish Studies Association in Los Angeles.
