The possibility for real and deep dialogue between Jews and Christians depends on honest conversation that does not shy away from controversy. To understand the roots of Jewish-Christian conflict, which date to the time of Jesus, we must understand the messianic conceptions among Jewish groups at that time and the self-understanding of the historical Jesus.

In this session, Israel Knohl explores the claim that ancient Israel had two different and contradictory conceptions about the king-messiah, both reflected in the Hebrew Bible: one that understood this figure as the son of God and another that completely differentiated between the Divine and the human messiah.
