Gabriel Abensour is a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University and a Fellow at the Kogod Research Center of the Shalom Hartman Institute. He holds a PhD in Jewish History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His scholarship examines the intellectual and cultural history of North African Jews in the early modern and modern periods. His earlier work addressed Jewish life under colonial rule; his current project turns to the early modern Maghreb, especially Algeria and Morocco. Before joining Columbia, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Polonsky Academy at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute and taught at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies. He also teaches at the Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbis, where he received rabbinic ordination in 2021 through a joint program of the Shalom Hartman Institute and HaMidrasha at Oranim. Alongside his scholarship, he publishes essays and commentary for broader audiences in Hebrew and French.
