Shalom Hartman Institute will conduct a memorial evening in January for world-renowned Judaic studies scholar Yochanan Muffs, who died December 6, 2009.
Muffs was a close associate of many at the Institute, which published his book, The Personhood of God, in Hebrew, in 2007.
In the book, Muffs examined the anthropomorphic evolution of the Divine Image – from creator of the cosmos to God the father, the husband, the king, the ultimate master – and how these different images of God have shaped our faith and world view.

The memorial will be held January 19, 2010.
Hartman Institute Founding President David Hartman wrote the foreword to the book’s 2005 English edition. Hartman once said of Muffs that he was a "master of midrashic analysis whose rich theological imagination reveals the gripping realism of the biblical God and the intensity of God’s relationship to human history."
