Ariella

Newberger

Manager of Teen Community and Engagement

Ariella Newberger is the Manager of Teen Community and Engagement at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, where she recruits, mentors and designs programs for high school students that foster a strong connection to Jewish peoplehood and instill confidence in nuanced, curious and creative Jewish text study.

Ariella has over a decade of experience as an educator and community organizer. Most recently, Ariella served as the Student Life and Residence Life Coordinator at Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), where she oversaw experiential education and leadership development initiatives for college and graduate level students. She spearheaded successful dialogue groups among her students surrounding contentious topics, supervised residential staff and oversaw Jewish Life and Orientation programming. She also recently served as an Organizing Fellow for Zioness, providing community networking and activism opportunities in New York City for progressive individuals that hold Zionist identities.

Prior to that, Ariella was a Judaic and General studies classroom educator in Rodeph Sholom School, The Leffell School and the Heschel School. She has experience educating students from every denominational background, and most enjoys when her students surprise her with insights she never anticipated due to their discovering its relevance to their own unique selves and lived experiences. She began her career at Drisha Institute for Jewish Education where she coordinated admissions, programming and alumni engagement for all its wonderful initiatives that served high school students, artists and post-college scholars alike.

Ariella studied Psychology at Brandeis University, Jewish Ethics and Social Justice at the Gershon Kekst Graduate School at JTS, and has studied in the educator programs at Pardes and Hadar. She enjoyed her unique upbringing as an Orthodox rabbi’s daughter at a Conservative synagogue, all while pursuing a 12-year day school education at the Yeshivah of Flatbush followed by a gap year at Midreshet HaRova.

Ariella lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and knows all the tricks for seeing the best of New York City without getting overwhelmed by the crowds. She loves to teach, sing, dance, act, write, host lively Shabbat dinners for her many opinionated friends, and most importantly, spend quality time with her six very cool nieces.
