Expanding the Institute’s Impact in Canada

Courageous Leadership Canada

The Shalom Hartman Institute is thrilled to share the expansion of our impact in Canada, as the Institute and its Canadian Board of Directors announce the renaming of the Canadian Friends of the Shalom Hartman Institute to the Shalom Hartman Institute of Canada. When Rabbi David Hartman made aliyah from Montreal in 1971, he left deep Canadian roots. Now, more than 50 years later, we are applying Hartman’s approach—using Jewish wisdom to address the complexities of contemporary Jewish life—while honouring the unique perspective of the Canadian Jewish experience.

“With a deep connection to Canada, rooted in Rabbi David Hartman’s legacy and his impact in Montreal, the Institute is elevating the Canadian Jewish conversation around Jewish peoplehood, pluralism, and Zionism, and generating ideas tailored to Canada as we support the leaders who are enriching Canadian Jewish life.” – Karen Kollins, Director of Canada, Shalom Hartman Institute of North America

The name Shalom Hartman Institute of Canada reflects the expanding scope of our work in Canada and better aligns with our mission, underscoring our renewed commitment to ensuring the strength and vibrancy of the Canadian Jewish community and its contribution to the broader resilience of the Jewish people worldwide. As the Hartman Institute continues its mission to address critical challenges facing the Jewish community and enhance Jewish life in Israel and North America, we remain committed to empowering Canadian Jewish leaders and exploring these issues through the lens of the Canadian Jewish experience.

Recent initiatives include:
