The 2010 Lay Leadership Summer Study Retreat, an annual, week-long program of lectures, seminars, study, trips, and discussion, is under way at Shalom Hartman Institute. In 2010, nearly 100 Jewish community leaders from North America, Israel, Europe, and elsewhere, are participating in the program.

The theme of the 2010 program is: Engaging Israel: Jewish Values and the Dilemmas of Nationhood. Participants are hearing from members of the Institute’s "Engaging Israel" Project, including Dr. Tal Becker, Yossi Klein Halevi, Prof. Gil Troy, and others.

Seminar and lecture topics include: "Judaism: The Value of Peoplehood," "The Jewish People and the State of Israel," "Zionism: The Question of Sovereignty," and others. Along with the Engaging Israel members, many Hartman Institute scholars, as well as Shalom Hartman Institute North America President Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer, are teaching classes.

The group will spend special evenings with Rabbi Prof. David Hartman and Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, as well.

Trips during the week include visits with Israeli Arabs, haredim, soldiers, and others.
