The Shalom Hartman Institute Lay Leadership Summer 2008 Study Retreat will run from June 25 to July 2.   This is a description of the program:   While narratives such as the Exodus from Egypt, the revelation at Sinai, and the destruction of the Temples serve as common foundations of Judaism, their varying interpretations have given rise to great diversity within the Jewish community. Through a close study of significant texts, major holidays, lifecycle rituals and historical events, Lay Leaders participating in the program will explore the paradoxical role of Jewish narratives, addressing some of the following questions:  What are the foundational narratives we all share? How do our narratives and rituals create a unique Jewish memory? What values do our narratives teach? What kind of human being do they seek to create? How do different interpretations of core narratives influence Jewish life today? How do Israeli narratives influence the future of Israel-Diaspora relations?  In celebration of the State of Israel's 60th year, the program this summer emphasizes the challenges and achievements of Israeli society and culture. The usual lectures, tutorials and panel discussions will be supplemented by encounters with Israeli thinkers, politicians and military leaders, as well as excursions into various arenas of Israeli life.   For more information, contact Meirav Fishman at the Institute.
