Hartman Institute and Hillel Announce Hartman Fellowship for Campus Professionals

New framework will cultivate early- and mid-career senior campus professionals

The Shalom Hartman Institute and Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life are pleased to announce the Hartman Fellowship for Campus Professionals program, which will launch in July 2012. This new framework for ongoing study, enrichment, and intellectual leadership training, will cultivate a select cohort of early- and mid-career senior campus professionals – thought leaders in their local communities and for college-age students across the continent. The core curriculum of the Fellowship will be based on the Hartman Institute iEngage Project, which focuses on articulating a new narrative for defining the relationship between Israel and world Jewry.

"Hillel’s campus professionals are the best positioned to engage students in conversations about Israel. Too often, however, these professionals do not have the nuanced knowledge needed to do so," explains Abigail Dauber Sterne, Vice President for Global Jewish Experience at Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. "Hillel’s partnership with the Hartman Institute presents a wonderful opportunity to increase the knowledge of a select group of professionals, with the ultimate goal of engaging more students in thoughtful conversations and activities about Israel."

"College-aged youth often feel alienated from Israel and question its relevance to their lives. More than any other constituency, younger Jews are less convinced or motivated by the crisis narratives in which the traditional relationship with Israel was grounded," explains Rabbi Julia Andelman, iEngage Project North American Director. "Recognizing the crucial role that campus professionals play in the development of the next generation of Jews and Jewish leaders, the Fellowship will train this select group of campus leaders to think in more sophisticated terms about Israel as a core element of Jewish life and to then cultivate substantive and compelling conversations about and relationships with Israel in the college communities they serve, connecting students to a deeper understanding of themselves as Jews and as members of the Jewish people."

The Fellowship for Campus Professionals will be directed by Hartman Institute faculty member Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, who has served as the Executive Director of the Yitzhak Rabin Hillel Center for Jewish Life at UCLA for 36 years. The Fellows’ academic year will begin and end with week-long summer seminars at the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Two in-person seminars in the U.S. and biweekly video conference study with Hartman faculty will keep participants connected between seminars.
