Now you can watch or listen to free lectures from Shalom Hartman Institute scholars and guests on your iPod, iPhone, iPad, tablet, smartphone, mp3 player, mp4 (video) player or on your computer. There are multiple ways to listen and be informed about new programs: via iTunes and right now on your computer. New programs will be uploaded on a regular basis, so subscribe to the free Podcasts to receive additional free lectures for listening. Follow the directions below and select the method that suits you best.
Watch and listen on iTunes
iTunes is a program from Apple Inc. that allows you to listen to music and watch videos on your computer, iPod, iPhone, iPad or tablet, and to download new programs as they become available. Click here or on the microphone icon above to begin listening to our audio podcast via iTunes. If you do not have iTunes on your computer, the page on the Apple website will direct you in downloading it (the program is free). Click here for detailed directions on setting up and using iTunes on your computer and iPod.
Shalom Hartman Institute Podcasts on iTunes
The easiest and most common way to watch, listen to and download podcasts is through Apple's iTunes software, which is free and easily installed on PC's and Macintosh computers. If you don’t already have iTunes installed on your computer, go to http://itunes.com to find the software and download it. Note: if you have clicked on the iTunes link or microphone icon shown above, you will be directed to download iTunes if you do not already have it installed on your computer.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please don't get confused! iTunes is a program you download on your computer that organizes and plays digital audio and video (that is called the iTunes Player). AND it is also an online store like Amazon - the iTunes Store - that can be used to buy, rent, and download all kinds of digital media, including songs, recordings, TV shows, movies, and podcasts. The iTunes Store is where the Shalom Hartman Institute podcasts will be found, via the Store links shown on the iTunes Player when it is open and running on your computer.
Once the software is up and running on your computer, you can easily subscribe to our free podcasts. Here's how:
-
On the left-hand side of the iTunes Player screen is a tab that says STORE. Underneath the tab is the iTunes Store link. Click on the iTunes Store link.
-
Once the iTunes Store opens, go to the Search box (upper right-hand corner) and type in "Shalom Hartman Institute."
You may find more than one item shows up. One of the programs is our audio podcast. The other is our video podcast. The two programs are similar, but some videos are not on the audio podcast and vice-versa. Select the item with the Institute's logo that you want. We hope you choose both!
-
For information about the podcasts, and to see a list of available programs, click on the Institute logo or the title.
-
To subscribe to the podcasts, click on the SUBCRIBE tab on one or both of them. You will not see a popup window or box telling you that you have subscribed successfully, but you should then be able to begin downloading the podcasts.
-
On the left-hand side of the iTunes screen is a column headed "LIBRARY." The fourth item down says "Podcasts" and is marked by a small icon of a microphone. Click on that icon. Your list of podcast subscriptions should then show.
-
You can update the podcasts by clicking on the "Refresh" tab on the lower right-hand side of the screen, or you can select individual podcasts for downloading.
-
Once the downloading has completed, you can listen or view by clicking on the link.
-
To download the podcast to your iPod, plug your iPod into your computer. An icon for your iPod should then show up on the left-hand side of the iTunes screen. Click on the icon, and follow the instructions it will give you to download ("sync") the podcasts into the player.
-
You can also set up iTunes to download and "sync" your podcasts automatically to your iPod, so that your iPod will be updated with the latest program when you connect your iPod to your computer for charging and "sync-ing." Those directions are on the iTunes Player.
-
IMPORTANT NOTE: You need speakers or a set of headphones to hear the audio program and the audio portion of a video podcast.
