Do not invoke Amalek lightly   (12/03/2008)

To paraphrase Pogo
Reading the comments I can only conclude "We have found Amelek and he is us". Those who identify the other as Evil therefore not worth treating as human are the essence of Amelikitism-- These people make an adloyada which is the tragedy of Israel today.

if al-Qaida = Amalek, then
Surely, if the precedent for being coined Amalek is the seeking of the complete destruction of anything or anyone connected with the word `Jewish`, then anyone or anything connected to al-Qaida is also Amalek, correct? That includes maddrassas, terrorist training / refugee camps, every Muslimist preacher and follower, all of Pakistan, Afghanistan & Iran, where does it stop?

Prejudism
Any generalizations about any group because of the short comings of a few individuals in that group is called "prejudism". Jews are the victims of one of the oldest forms of prejudism called anti-semitism. Collective punishments against people such as was done to the Jews during the holocaust was injust. The nazis used the excuse that since some Jews were communists, then all of the Jews were somehow also contaminated by this.

Generalizations are permitted
Rabbi Hartman is wrong and inconsistent concerning generalizations. The truth is that it depends. It was certainly permitted to generalize about the Germans, for example, at least at one point. The simple fact is that the vast majority of Arabs do not recognize Israel`s right to exist, and there are sermons and demonstrations calling for the slaughter of Jews all over the Muslim world. Rabbi Hartman`s supposed concern for human decency here is in fact a very dangerous, and lethal position that can greatly increase the sufferings of the Jewish people. Indeed, Hartman himself ignores Esther 9, where Jews kill thousands of Persians in self-defense. Haman was clearly not a lone individual, and neither was this evil, barbaric Arab terrorist.

Amalek or not
Whether or not the Arabs who live among the Jews are Amalek, they are an existential threat to the Jews of Israel. Should they be eliminated through ending their lives or relocating them is an issue secondary to the reality of the moment: they have repeatedly shown readiness to commit murder and mayhem. No manner of appeasement has worked. It is doubtful that short of Jewish suicide, they will stop their murderous ways. Is this a generalization of an entire population of people? Absolutely. But Jewish lives are of far more value than ivory tour intellectual considerations. The Arabs must go.

Eliminating Amalek
The monster who butchered the Yeshiva Bochers-and the hideous creatures who applauded him in Gaza-are vermin. If they aren`t Amalekites they are still a permanent threat to the survival of Israel`s Jews.Get rid of them before they get rid of you.(Expulsion is preferable.)

Strange Rabbi, Strange Lesson...
The Pali`s dont have to be amalek to be generalised about, and deemed a collective danger to Israel. They could be Moab, ammon, the 7 Canaanite nations, the Philistines, Esau, or - yes, that`s it - Yishmael! And as Hashem commanded Avraham "drive out this maid and her son", so too, collectively, we feel about the Pali`s - we do NOT wish their eradication, but simply their relocation. This is the only solution for long-term peace. You are a remarkably ill-informed Rabbi, to think that being compared with amalek is the only way of "generalising" about the Pali`s.

wrong principles
i think the present plight of Israel is caused by the destructive principles embarked upon by its leaders. in order to expel this fatal principle that`s taking its toll on the innocent Israelis, all Arabs should be sent out of Israel or else you all will just wake one day and find out that the Holy land has been taken over by this evil minded people. why should the authority integrate arabs into israeli society? in africa for example, the arabs are wrecking havoc on black africans, because they believe they are superior to any other race in the world. try and visit sudan or chad one day and you will see for yourself the ordeal black africans had sufferd in the hands of these people. Expel them before the take land from you!

Amalek
Had King Saul obeyed G-d the Amalekites would be no more!!! May our people return to complete obedience to G-d`s commands & raise their voices against those who would appease our enimies to the point that we all perish!!
MatitiYAHu, America, Mar 13 2008 5:59:00:000PM

Amalek
What was the aim of Amalek ? what is the aim of Hamas and the people that voted for Hamas ? Who was celebrating the cold blooded murder of Mercaz HaRav students ? who were distributing candy on the streets and giving thanks in their prayers at their Mosques for these murders? If it looks like Amalek, it walks like Amalek and it talks like Amelek, then its Amelek.
Joshua Asafnak, USA, Mar 13 2008 2:42:00:000PM

desagree
interesting, but I` disagree with you on applying the concept of Tshuva and Tzlem Elokim to the Arabs. see the Kapach Edition of Mishne Tora הלכות מלכים ומלחמות פרק ט specifically the last Halacha (19), they are different, also see Tos BK 38 a (not clear they are called "Adam")

You call yourself philosopher? I think your analysis lacks depth and clarity. All arabs seek to kill the Jews and reclaim erez israel for themselves. Your words not to judge a nation for actions of individuals are a fig leaf in the hands of terrorists. There is no nation, even though your left wing philosophers philosophize otherwise.
James, USA, Mar 13 2008 7:03:00:000AM

Amalek; How wrong you are, Rabbi.
The `Palestinian People` are themselves a genocidal weapon, wholly created by the Arab world, out of human beings, with one purpose, and one purpose only - to destroy the Jews, both individually and collectively, and to replace them with a people that is trying to destroy or usurp our history. While there may be righteous individuals among them, they are the exception that proves the rule, and certainly no leader has ever emerged amongst them who has forsworn the goals of Amalek. Do our teachings not also say `if a man comes to kill you, rise up before him and kill him first`?
Michael Maine, usa, Mar 13 2008 4:04:00:000AM

Remember Amalek
Very well articulated - but sadly very wrong, and very dangerous. Even the casual observer can`t help but be struck by the glaring association made by the fact that the people getting up from shiva will do so erev parshat zachor. If it was at any other time of year, we could perhaps hear the cries to love all who are created in the image of God. But not today, not this week. Indeed THE WHOLE REASON we are mourning this week is because of the overly sympathetic hearts that simply refuse to see the enemy for what he is - a terrorizing merciless soulless beast that must be fought in kind.

mordechi and haman
in rabbi hartman`s editorial, he states that generalizations are bad, and uses as an example a generalization that haman made against all jews when he was mad only at mordechi. it is my contention that haman was right to generalize and make a judgement against all jews when mordechi would not bow down to him. after all, the reason he would not bow down is because he was jewish, and therefore only bowed down to hashem. as a result, i do not find this example at all compelling. rather, it has the opposite effect that rabbi hartman intended. this is one example where it was entirely appropriate to take the act of 1 jew, and make a judgement about jews in general. may all of us jews be like mordechi, and bow down to only hashem.
Randi, Israel, Mar 12 2008 10:37:00:000PM

Amelek/hartman
I disagree with your generalization assertion...You assume that people are making statements of Amelek with no precedence...if you observe the arab /Jewish condition one can see the tragedy at Mercaz Harav is not the first incident and the "cult of death" will strike continuously as they do, if we continue to be pansies!

Do invoke Amalek
Amalek representes the people against the GOD of Israel. Amalek also destroyed other population including the Palenstinian. Amalek is a real people. In Torah it is a physical presence in the land of Caanan. It is also the spirit of the Amalek god to destroy all people. GOD said to destroy the Amalek. The Amalek were defended and Israel claimed the inheritance GOD gave. The enemies of Israel continued until King David & King Solomon. This was the only time Israel was respected. Today Israel is decided by Nations who seek to destroy Israel. We have a Shas government who refuse to do military service as GOD commanded them to do. They use orthdoxy as an escape from obligation as written in Torah. So Israel now suffers at the hands of the enemies within. GOD said he wil destroy the enemies of Israel. GOD also said He will give Israel to hands of the enemies if we do obey his blessings. We have ignored GOD and followed othodoxy practices. Now Israel fights for survivil. Israel will previal and Israel will be restored All the Lands back to Israel. It will not happen today It will not happen tomorrow next month or next year. It will happen on GOD timing not United Nations timing. Israel will go through many more attacks until then. The Orthodox deny Israel and obligation. The secular & some modern yeshiva youths believe in Israel. When GOD returns again there will be No Orthodox. There will only be Judaism as GOD instructed in Torah
