Many Jews throughout the world have moved on with there lives and visions for their families. The Holocaust truly does not define them. However there is a contingent of Jews blindly dedicated to Israel that let the Holocaust permeate their thinking. For them, the Holocaust has become a shield they can hide behind in practicing excesses against the Arabs. Many times over I have heard settlers tell me how justified they are because of some purported support the Mufti of Jerusalem had for Germany in WWll. Palestinians today are being made to suffer for these hateful feelings of Jewish settlers.

I`m suffering from this article
How can it be said that Jewish people have not let their suffering define them when all the world hears about is Jewish suffering and how there has never been any suffering like it. This is used as a weapon so that Israel can go on continuously causing the suffering of others or to silence those who dare to condemn or criticize Israel. I also must ask as JOJO did, and I myself have a Jewish background, what planet are you living on?

I have the impression, that also in favorable times, good part of the Jews preserve the idea, of beeing the eternal victime and keep it like a valuable treasure, which they wouldn`t like to `loose` at no price. That allows them, to always keep a self-righteous position in relation to other folks no matter how goodwilling they are. It allows them to avoid any self-reflection and there is nothing more unifying tham common enemies. I even have the impression, they do conserve it with some kind of pride and it allows them to suppress another folk since more than 40 years, without any serious pangs of remorse (at least a good part of them).

comment on two talkbacks
@JOJO He meant the Israeli people, not the Jewish people; i think. @ravi You have obviously never been in Israel, or spoke with an Israeli person. As much as the European Jews know little about Israel and the reasons and unfolding of its wars, nor do the Israelis know about the European war and the racism that exists here

Victims? yes but
Now is the time to be survivors. Time to let the pain go and grow up.
MW, England, May 12 2010 9:46:00:000PM

what?!!!
i have never heard anything more ridiculous. i myself am half-jewish and have never known a people MORE defined by their suffering than my fellow jews. what planet are you living on?
JOJO, UK, May 11 2010 4:26:00:000PM

The meta-narrative
Is it possible that those who view antisemitism and the holocaust as a stale meta-narrative are the ones who actually make their presence more vivid and relevant?
Misha Sommer, U.K., May 11 2010 3:17:00:000PM

stop
we stop being victims
michel, france, May 11 2010 11:09:00:000AM

you got it wrong...!!
no israeli, or non israeli jew, can remain unaffected by the legacy of the holocaust. it was too terrible a happening. sadly israeli jews are using the holocaust to justify the suffering they in turn are subjecting the palestinians to. this is the worst disservice being done to the holocaust victims memory.
ravi, india, May 11 2010 6:42:00:000AM

you
I fear that you are becoming increasingly defined by the suffering you are imposing on the Palestinian people.
richard frost, UK, May 10 2010 9:57:00:000PM

israel hasn`t defined itself by its suffering?
is that a joke?
paul, USA, May 9 2010 4:52:00:000PM

suffering
With all due respect, and that sincerely, I must disagree, and from experience. Having lived in Israel for 3 years, my experience is that Israeli Jews cannot let go of their pain because it is familiar fuel for everyday living. Many do not see any validity in the claims of suffering they cause, especially upon the Palestinian people. "They don`t suffer as much as we did, so their suffering is not valid."
Marlin Vis, USA, May 9 2010 3:27:00:000PM

The sapling
Israel was born from the Holocaust, and still lives by the Holocaust. The template of the Holocaust is stamped on the Israeli soul. Sadly, too many know no other way to conduct themselves.
MW, England, May 9 2010 8:02:00:000AM

Don`t make of suffering a taboo.
Suffering has been so terrible, so continuous, so constant and intense in our expertience as a nation, tant it cannot be rendered a taboo. And there is another term, even more psychologically incorrect than suffering. It is being a victim. Now that is a worse taboo even. But it is true. The Jewish people has been a victom for millenia. And continues to be a victim of the mutations of anti-Semitism and blind hate. We should not shy away from this truth, however heroic and virtuous our resilience has been.

suffering defines
new to this paper, i realize that as opposed to any other countries` papers, yours is rife with articles about the holocaust, war, and peace. i would hate being an israeli that must wake up to this every morning. i think you live in a bubble. go to africa, a continent plagued with death, and it is the last thing they speak about. they define themselves with their music and cheer. this meta-narrative about the suffering of the jewish people is getting old.
bob khor, united kingdom, May 7 2010 3:51:00:000PM

Suffering
"...we have not let our suffering define us..." You`re kidding, right? Our `geopolitical` thinking is defined by nothing else these days. That is the prism through which we see the outside world. It used to be a mix of our past suffering and our inherent love for universal justice and righteousness but these days, for quite some time, we are back to the one-horse race of seeing everything in the hues of past suffering.
LBruce, Holland, May 7 2010 10:17:00:000AM

the tree
What a lovely thought,As proud and tall as a tree, Rabbi Hartman could not have said it better then you!
Robert Lovell, Canada, May 6 2010 5:38:00:000PM

Wish that it were true
I was struck by the comment that "we have not let our suffering define us and inhibit our commitment to life" etc My experience is just the opposite. Indeed, what troubles me is that that suffering is often used to justify behavior entirely incompatible with what I hoped would be a heightened sense of compassion. This is not simply an Israeli challenge but one for American Jews as well. We often use the suffering as justification for the suffering of others.
Geoffrey, United States, May 6 2010 1:13:00:000PM

suffering does not define
Israel has yet to reach that point. To often it is the Holocaust that defines Israel
