Reclaiming our vision of a Jewish State   (29/12/2009)

what the prophets should tell
It is difficult for Israel to discuss its vision, and consequently also to replace it with another vision. The reason for this is that there are two visions in Israel: 1) a Jewish Eretz Israel, and 2) following universal moral laws. Most Israeli`s believe in both visions. The problem is however that in practice, they are at odds with each other. One can notice this by the signs of the tension between these visions. For example before 1948 many Labor Zionists believed that ordinary Palestinians were not against Jewish immigration, but were incited by the ruling class. This idea eased there conscience by taking away the conflict between their ideals. After 1948 however, in order to legitimise stopping a return of Palestinian refugees, Labor Zionists believed the very opposite, namely that ordinary Palestinians were implacably hostile. In that situation they neede the opposite believe to ease their conscience. There are many more signs of this tension between the visions. Instead of having these two visions, I am convinced it would be better for Israel to develop one vision (for instance a compromise between these two visions). The difficulty is however that Israeli`s tend to deny that in practice their two visions are at odds with each other. This, and not the Palestinians, is the basic problem of Israel and Zionism.

Reclaiming our vision for Jewish state
Very good article. Just to say prophets foretold the life of the Jews in great detail. That prophecy is still relevant. As long as our nation exists, the word of prophecy will continue to be relevant to us into its detail. The word of prophecy was spoken many centuries ago, but it is up to su to make sure that were make relevant interpretation to out time. We are living in the 21st century and our nation is definately different from what it was in the 1st century. what remains is that our law should never be compromised a bit but should be enforce as it was during the old times while bearing in mind that we are living in the 21st century. Another point to note is that the whole Holy Scriptures were written for Jews; the Torah, Old testament and the New testament. These were written to guide the Jews on how to live for God. They were for the Jews first then for the Gentiles. We are suppose to teach the Gentiles our God`s ways.

Priests and Prophets
The aricle is not only scholarly, it touches the essence of what a true religion should be. It reminds me of Bishop Desmond Tutu`s saying that a religion true to its tenets cannot ignore social justice. I think Jews should follow Avigdor Lieberman`s policy of making friends in Africa through tikum olam.Nice one.

Shalom Hartman and who we are...
I remember your Father (grandfather) Rabbi David Hartman, in the Bailey Schul in Montreal and his "fire and Brimstone" Speeches, keep on keeping on with that tradition and Amein to your article, we forget sometimesa who we are.

Democracy? Probably not yet.
Democracy can only prevail within a relatively homogenous society. Israel is the most non-homogenous society on the planet. Can an `absolute democracy` which most Israelis so revere really survive in such a country?

Prophecy
As director of The Prophecy Society, I agree, Israel needs to heed the prophets of Israel as recorded in the Tanakh. The prophets foretold the history of the Jewish people in great detail, all the way from the time of Solomon down to at least 1967. Understanding the prophets is key to understanding today`s Israel.

Daniel Hartman`s essay
Daniel Hartman is on point and his message is urgent. What was it that led to the destruction of the Temple? Jewish discord and hatred among brothers. We must respect each fellow Jew and find common ground in our shared identity. My 16 year old son just returned from a wonderful teenage trip to Israel and came back more zionist and with a renewed appreciation for his Jewish indentity, just as I hoped he would (and just as I did when I returned from my first visit when I was 16). His only negative experience was at the Kotel where he was called a "Nazi" by a fellow Jew because he refused to wrap t`fillin and then, in response to a question which is none of the fellow`s business, expressed a willingness to marry a non-Jew. How sad. Inter-marraige in the US is a problem, the solution for which is not name calling to a 16 year old! Of course, even as I write this it becomes clear that a discussion of common Jewish values is difficult to seperate from the real "hot-button" political issues of the day.

discussion
Personally, I agree with you that there should be more discussion. For example: in my opinion the International Bible Contest is just a waste of time. It does not discuss anything or increase anybody`s understanding. All it does is show who has the best memory for trivia. What the Shalom Hartman Institute should do is sponsor a national "debate" on an issues by asking people to send in an article each year on a subject. For example: Does "fasting" and "tormenting one`s soul" mean the same thing? Or: When discussing cooking in the mother`s milk, God specifically mentions the goat: Does the goat represent something special? Or: Did God just happen to use it as an example and could have just as easily have used a cow or a sheep? The problem in Israel today is that the rabbis have set themselves up as the "final word" on these subjects and they have the government, as well as the police, to enforce their interpretations.
