Are Jews ready for Obama?   (04/06/2009)

ready or not
Some of the comments made by other readers leads me to believe that they didn`t understand this article. It was not talking about policy, but broad, ethical thinking. If we search within ourselves as Jews, about how we should live, there is hope. But if we keep going back to the fear that paralyzes us as a people and gives us a myopic vision of us and them, there is no hope. How do we envision a relationship with others that is not defined by a battlefield? Yes, that is the question we should be asking ourselves.

Obama speech to cario
Reaching out to the world ..a good idea.....But for Israel what he said and what he thinks is not good...Israel is always giving up land and asked to give more..and what exactly are they getting when they give up their land? More rockets aimed at them , more suscide bombers killing them More palestinians complaining about them..Give me a break.
harriet, USA, Jun 28 2009 5:50:00:000PM

misled
This article is erroneous. The Jewish people are now fighting over parking on Shabbat in Jerusalem and the lesson is that you are too fragmented to have any other aspirations beyond survival. And some groups of Jews care very little about the survival of the Zionist State. The author`s sense of "we" seems like it fails to distinguish between "ought" and "is". Further, the use of "Obama`s world" here is offensive in the most imperialist western way.

Are Jews ready for Obama?
Donnile Hartman has posed a serious question. However, the answer in his article leads into the wrong direction. To begin with, the headline of the article should be phrased differently. It ought to be " Is Israel ready for Obama?" - which is not the same. Sadly, a great number of American Jews are not only ready for Obama, they even support this empty suit, paralyzing his audience with buttered and hollow, lullaby-like phrases. Secondly, being ready for Obama does not and must not mean whether or not Israel is ready to give up her legitimate claims by naively believing there is a " potential for a new future". Apart from the fact that Obama has no new ideas ( where should he have learnt foreign policy in his socialist activist past in Chicago?) concerning the Middle East, the obstacle for peace is not " the Jews" but the fanatic refusal of the Arab world to accept Israel`s existence. So to answer Hartman`s question realistically one must say "hopefully not", because accepting illusions as solutions is the greatest mistake Netanyahu could make. (By the way, Obama is known to be extremely ambitious. Israel, do not forget that this man wants to receive the Nobel Peace Prize at any price. And he would not bother about being on the same list as peace-seeking Arafat. ) Josef Hueber Germany

Are Jews ready for Obama?
O.K. I understand, now. We all click our heels together three times, while chanting the magic words, and the Arabs will stop killing us. I am so happy about that. Oh, wait a minute, will someone please tell us the magic words? I quote from the article:"Has the trauma of the Holocaust and the ongoing fight for survival traumatized us to such an extent that we can only speak about short-term survival questions?" And the answer is YES! We live for today here in Israel. We hope a suicide murderer will not blow us or our family away. We hope Iran will not send a nuclear bomb into out cities."Short-term survival"? Yes, Rabbi Hartman, we live from one day to the next, hoping not to be killed. President Obama has no concern for Israel. His aim is much much higher.
Yaakov Reuven, Israel, Jun 13 2009 8:03:00:000AM

Obama and Hope-
Mr. Hartman is a very naive person. You never lived through anti-semitisim and you wouldn`t recognize it if it hit you in the face. G-d help Jews like you who put their hope in a new leader that has no love or appreciation for Israel.
Harry Abram, USA, Jun 13 2009 3:10:00:000AM

Netanyahu missed the boat
I don`t think so! Mr.Netnyahu, you don`t need to answer to anyone and you surely don`t need to answer to us americans for any decisions you need to make. The only one you need to answer to is God, He gave Israel to the Jewish people and the land belongs to you. You should not comprise your position as Jew`s for any one person or country. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is your protector and He will protect Israel not matter what. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem every day. I will continue to pray for you in your decision making. DO NOT GIVE UP ANY OF YOUR LAND, nor agree to anything to do with a two state agreement. you do not need the headache. Just Trust in the Lord and He will bring it to pass. All the promises He made to the Jews in the Torah still stands today, tomorrow and forever. Amen and Amen. God Bless You. Dolores, USA

Obama`s World
As a christian pastor I am saddened by the lack of clear vision demonstrated by Mr. Hartman. He demonstrates a refusal to accept reality. Israel and the Jewish people are hated by the Muslim world and Mr. Obama isn`t particularly bothered by that fact.
Efraim V, USA, Jun 11 2009 7:52:00:000AM

The New World
Great article If embattled Israel can extend the hand of peace perhaps there is hope for all humanity!!! No it won`t be easy and there will be setbacks but it is our duty to keep working and make the kingdom of GOD a reality for ALL.
Kwende I Madu, USA, Jun 11 2009 1:25:00:000AM

the problem with Obama`s world
It does not take into account the more than 1400 years of Islamic antisemitism and the slaughter of more millions of Jews than the Nazis during this extended time period. If anything the Moslems owe us for their excesses on our people. They should grant us all the land of Israel. However, it is against their religion and would involve a violation of the basic commandments of Mohammad to humiliate and destroy all Jews. Therefore Obama`s putting the blaim of the Jewish state as an attempt by the Europeans to atone for the Nazi excesses plays into the justification of the Islamisists to their attempts to anihilate the Jewish people and destroy Israel.

we are ready
as a jew and as an american i am ready for barack obama to lead not only our nation but the world in achieving peace. we need to look at ourselves not as separate entities but as a global community. i for one love life. it is disturbing to read some of the blog entries which continue to breed hate and disdain for one another. it is the religious extremes who seem to believe that it is their way only. we were ALL created in G-d`s image. our goal here on earth is to learn how to live in peace and harmony. barack obama opens discourse to that goal.

obama
I pray your great leader does not listen to obama,he is slowly destroying America,or maybe not to slow.He can make a good speech, that someone else has written for him,but he has too many freinds that don`t like Israel and that worries me,because God says,I will bless them that bless you,and curse them that curse you about Israel.May God bless and protect America and Israel!

obama`s world
Hope. Where would we be without it? We all hope, pray and want peace, security. cooperation, brotherhood, and end to wars, suicide-bombers, hatred, hunger, poverty, etc. Did I say "all?` Sorry. Some want Jihad, Allah, Mohammed and the Koran, a world governed by their religious idiotology. They not only want it...they will kill, murder, destroy, burn, torture, behead, anyone and everyone who will stand in their way. Hope? Yes. Hitler? Achmadinajad? A nuclear Iran? Jihad? Al Queda? Bin Laden? Hizbollah? Hamas? Nasrallah? Jihad? Czechoslovakia? No. Never again.

Donniel Hartman
I am not sure what all this eloquent babble means but high-sounding ideals and subjective words are best left in the land of Oz. Our aspirations do not stop at survival but they certainly start with survival. The picture is simple. A billion Muslims want to throw the Jews in the sea. Until they give up that goal, everything else is meaningless.
Maurice Douek, USA, Jun 6 2009 4:39:00:000AM

makes a lot of sense
Thank you. Beautifully said. I especially like this part : "What do we want from Israel? Who do we want to be? What role do we want to have in the Middle East? How do we envision a relationship with others that is not defined by the battlefield? How do we view our larger purpose, both as individuals, a religion, and a state? What is the message and larger vision of our Jewish state?" I wish more people on both sides of this conflict thought like you do. I pray for peace for all of us.

Protect Israel
God bless Israel. I`m an American Christian living in America. The thoughts and prayers of the Christians here in America are with you. This adminstration and those on the left here are also trying to ignore and quite our belief in God. To oboma and those on the left what`s good is evil, and what`s evil is good. I just want to let you know that it isn`t America that is turning her back on you it`s oboma and his liberal cohorts. Israel is Gods gift to you, do what you have to do to protect her. I have never been to Israel but the Bible tells us we will all be there with you at the end of times. There is a movement here in America for oboma to prove he was born in America. He has spent huge amounts of money to keep it covered up. We know very little about him. Personaly he scares alot of us. Go to World Net Daily on the internet they are doing a lot of work on this issue. If we can prove he is an imposter it could change everything for you and us. oboma is destroying our beautiful country, he is quickly taking our freedom, or democracy and our constitution away from us. oboma is a very dangerous man. May our God Bless You and keep you close. Mike Wendell and family...

Obama trying to abort WWIII
President Obama is trying to prevent a, possibly nuclear, world war between Islam and the rest of the world. He has decided that, in his quest for world peace, the Jews of Israel are expendable - not just the state but also the lives of the Jews who live there, and the entire Jewish people if that turns out to be necessary. Noone will miss them except other Jews. The world has already indicated that they have concluded that the greater good requires this, not un-willing, sacrifice of a people noone really wants anyway.

So many questions......
ARE JEWS READY FOR GOD? All the articles in the World will not help what is happening today. We know the truth, but refuse to accept it. Most of jews have made God void in their lives. Every action has a reaction. We recently read in the Torah Parshas BeChukotai. Black on White. We are to blame for our current situation. Those wwho want to give up our land to others, LEAVE. Go to America. Let us Jews take care of business here. We believe in God. We will prevail.

Are Jews ready for Obama?
The history of the Hebrew people has stretched several thousand years, of which for most of the last 2,000 years many have been displaced and dealt with treacherously. Obama cannot change the world as he continues to appease Islam, and Israel will again be at the losing end. It is not my opinion, but is written clearly in Scripture. Hope for peace, but prepare for war. Nothing changes until Shiloh comes!

obama speech
I think you got it right.
Saul Wasserman, USA, Jun 5 2009 6:38:00:000AM

Obama`s Cairo speech
One of my concerns is our own view and the world view of Israel as a nation formed and developed by displace European Jews. As much of the Israeli Jewish community is of Sephardic or North African origin, that is a highly erroneous view and leads many in the "Western World", possibly Obama and his advisors among them, to treat Israel and its existance as a "Holocost Reward Program". In my humble opinion, the sooner we abandon that focus and become more inclusive of the Jewishness of Israeli Jews ingathered from so many different cultures and histories, the more accurately we will define ourselves and our place in the world.
Sonja Schultz, USA, Jun 5 2009 1:15:00:000AM

Obama`s World?
Oh my, Donniel, what an unfortunate choice of words-Obama`s world?? I thought he was the elected president of the United States, albeit with a slim majority and much questionable campaign tactics. I just want to mention that Obama is not president of the WORLD, just of a country, just like Israel is also a country. As one published journalist today referred to Obama`s speech in Cairo--Yuppie hubris. Who doesn`t want to live in a world of peace, security and respect for all? Clearly, that is not Israel`s problem, but as for Israel`s neighbors--well, in what ways have they ever shown a willingness to live in harmony? Not with Israel, and not with their own fellow Arab brethren. The point is,Israelis do have to come to grips with who they are and what they want, but this will not be defined by obama`s world but only by our Jewish tradition--God and Torah. We have to stand up for who we are, and for our God-given right to be who we are in our own Land. Obama`s speech ius important because of what he did not say, not what he did say. Really, there was nothing in that speech that spoke to Jews, Israelis in any positive way. Finally, as a person who cheered (in person) at Obama`s statement in June of 2008at the AIPAC National Policy Conference that Jerusalem would never be divided,I was stunned and disappointed at his remarkable retraction the very next day. It was agood lesson. Obama`s world might as well be Disney world-only alot less fun
Fern Baker, Usa, Jun 5 2009 12:47:00:000AM

Amen
As usual, Doniel provides a visionary, clearsighted analysis of our current situation. We can only hope that his message is embraced and given "legs" by a majority in the Jewish community. Doniel provides a powerful challenge to Israel and the Jewish people as we contemplate our political and moral future in this world.

cool dreams of US Jews
People don`t understand Jewish support of Obama`s position towards Israel. They are simply tired of Israeli problems and they don`t make a mystery of that

Washington Post comment
Hello Rabbi Hartman, I read you posting on Washington Post in response to Obama`s speech and then your referenced web site. Your WP posting is already being mis-interpreted as that Obama was somewhat anti-Jewish by a pro-Obama Jewish respondent. I was uncertain where you stood. Please post your full article or, at least, a clear summary to clarify things. Errol ps I am 65, am Jewish, lived in Israel in the very early 70s , and fully agree with the viewpoint expressed in your full article.
Errol Korn, USA, Jun 4 2009 7:50:00:000PM

Obama`s world
While I do not necessarily disagree with the comments and the sentiments expressed in the article, I have trouble with the phrase, "Obama`s world." This is not his world and I do not need to be ready for it. Our focus needs to be on God`s world, the Torah`s world, and maybe even the mashiach`s world, but not "Obama`s world." For example, so much of the good will expressed in Obama`s speech today does not originate with the Qur`an but with the Torah and the world view developed by the prophets of Israel, and the sages that followed them long before the Qur`an (Mohammed) picked up on these ideas. My point is that we need to approach the situation not just with political correctness (Obama`s world), but also with truth (God`s world). Then perhaps real strides toward everlasting peace might be made.
Abe Weschler, Israel , Jun 4 2009 6:58:00:000PM
