A Golda Meir renaissance award for altruism
(Sorry for the herisson`s unelegance.) "Yes!" as an answer. The question? "Would Ms. Golda Meir join Mr Netanyahu?" An election is an ocean of signals, not just number crunching. The primaries choose not for a split but for Ms. Livni`s and Mr. Mofaz`s common clout. The election called for Likud and Kadima to form together a government. Today`s threats from Iran to Western politics require a broad-based, stable government. Kadima can not walk away to allow another chapter of foreign delegitimization of Israel. The gravitation-point on Palestine resides more in domestic than in foreign negotiations. Ms. Livni`s ambition should be with her people, not once again with her career.

Buying spin
I fully agree with your bottom line, but you one statement in there that is factually wrong, and is based on the spin of the Kadima PR advisors: You write: "The first part of the above equation is clearer. The 28 Knesset seats they won give to Kadima the first right of forming the coalition, as has been the custom since the beginning of the state. " Kadima didn`t win the election. They got the highest number of seats. In a parliamentary democracy, the party that can rule wins. Like it or not, that is Likud. According to the law, the President must offer the job to the one who can make a coalition, not to whoever has the most seats. Of course that is usually the one who has the most seats, but not because of any law or custom.
