Shooting the Arab
Also as a veteran IDF soldier, I think that the IDF has become a PC army. The political correctness that goes into each and every order and protocol is endangering our lives by making us doubt our instincts. Like "You cannot shoot someone who just threw a Molotov Cocktail at you" because he "no longer poses a threat" since he already threw it. All Iknow is, I will continue to follow my own instinct, which is "I will not hesitate".

stop the descent
The posters so far have basically said this is a non-event, and morals in war are pointless. But I would caution people thinking this way. Read up on the three states period wars in china, and the depths of what has happened in various parts of the world. The Jew vs Arab conflict is relatively civilised. It could become far more balkanised, and could descend to terrible levels. This is such a shame since Jews and Arabs are genetically identical. Muslim arabs also refer to Abraham, and the book of moses, so there should be a lot of common ground to build peace upon.

Rubber bullet
Has anyone checked why the soldier shot the rubber bullet? Remember Mohammad Al-Dura the completely faked incident? You Israelis who believe in "land for peace" have been deluded all along. The Palesinians and Muslims want all the land and all the Jews dead. When you finally get that through your heads you will understand that the first civil right is the right to stay alive. And live on our land or any portion of it. This has never been accepted by the Palestinians. So we wait and continue building the most amazing country on earth.

In the Middle
Kol ha-kavod to Donniel Hartman for that reasoned, dispassionate, sensible and caring response to the behavior that led to that repugnant video clip. He has turned this event into a reminder of the meaning of Reishit Tsmihhat Geulateinu -- in essence, looking with religious eyes at an event that others might see only politically. As Donniel reminds us, we Jews are Rachmanim bnei Rachmanim -- inherently compassionate -- and we should never forget that.

Angels and Israelites
To the readers who noted the error regarding the angels and the Israelites at the Sea of Reeds, thank you. We have corrected the error. Alan Abbey Website Director Shalom Hartman Institute

Who Stopped the Bulldozers?
I agree with Sylvia`s comment. Having served in the IDF, there`s way to much protocol. Several times I made the wrong move - which was to not take action at all - because I spent the precious seconds wondering if I was "allowed" to shoot. Too much mercy for the enemy, and not enough LOVE for our own people! TO DISAGREE WITH HARTMAN: I liked a lot of the article but... What you said about the Jews celebrating Egyptian deaths at the Sea of Reeds doesn`t make sense. YES, G-d scolded the ANGELS for celebrating "While My creations are drowning" -- yet G-d was joyful of the JEWS celebrating the death of the Egyptians since it was the JEWS (not the Angels) who had suffered by the hand of the Egyptians. We are not the Heavenly Angels who did not experience pain from the Egyptians. We are Jews who experience the nightmare of terrorists, nazis, inquisitors, ant-semites of all shades. We SHOULD celebrate at such moments. And we should celebrate as our ancestors, Miriam and Moshe zt"l did: By praising Hashem.

clarification
In the interest of education, according to that Midrash the Jewish people are entitled to sing their Song at the Sea. It is not they that God chastises; it is the angels who did not suffer under Pharaoh, and therefore have no right to rejoice. We are not angels - just human beings reaching for the better angels of our nature. Can our cousins say the same?

Ridiculous
This article and its "discussion" is a total waste. These sorts of acts don`t even warrant the attention they`re receiving. It`s pure propaganda from B`stelem. Who the hell cares about this? It`s a non-issue. Israel is at war with these people who were violently protesting Israel`s right to stop suicide bombings. I`m surprised that far worse incidents don`t occur on a more regular basis!

Rubber Bullets
As a mother of an IDf special forces soldier, I almost cry when I read such words. Wake-up, war is war no matter what the rest of the world thinks or high lofty moralizing. Israel is being attacked and needs to respond without the need to worry about how the enemy FEELS.It has been years of this kind of thinking. How many soldiers have died as a result of this way of thinking. The soldier you saw would not be in such a situation if the enemy had been taken out years ago. Now my son and other soldiers are another generation of soldiers now the victims of bad decisions made because people want to worry about how the enemy FEELS because of moral issues. Our soldiers are dying because they are put in useless situations because everyone tries to worry about moral issues.Does my son need to die? They are trained yet they must hesitate before they use their bullets. Whatever one wishes or hopes,I assure you they(enemy) will not shoot rubber bullets. They will kill because they are at WAR.
