God is not in history
I attended David Hartman`s talk on this subject on Shavuot and wrote about it in my blog at This Normal Life/ My take is here: http://www.thisnormallife.com/blog/_archives/2008/6/12/3741059.html

god`s work today is done by our hands. hartman could not be more correct, the covenant is a two way street; we are partners indeed.

Zionism at Sinai
To add my two cents to dave`s comment: Such a view, as suggested by Dave, mentioned in David Hartmans talk, is in my mind, in fact, the ultimate empowerment. Perhaps similar to the dictum "Ein somchin al hanes", which effectively denies the necessity for the "power" of prayer, and requires that people help themselves.

Zionism at Sinai
At Sinai, it must not be forgotten, that Moses broke the tablets of the covenant the same day the tablets were given, and God rewrote with His own finger the second set of tablets that went out of man`s reach into the Ark of the Covenant. Moses broke the tablets because he found Israel committing idolatry and breaking the covenant at the very moment he came to them with God`s precious and merciful covenant. And this was not the end of breaking. The Torah itself predicted that Israel would continue in this breaking of the Sinai covenant by idolatrous practices. And the prophets cried year after year against the decline of the generations of Israel as they sadly fulfilled the Torah prophecies in their systematic breaking of the same Sinai covenant, burning incense to Baal and approving of all the associated sins. We must ask, To what purpose was this covenant between God and Israel? Leviticus 26 prophesied that when Israel reached bottom, God Himself would remember His part of the Sinai covenant to fulfill the inheritance covenant He made with Abraham when He walked as a lamp between the pieces of the Levitical animals given for burnt offerings while Abraham slept (and while Levi was not yet born). What mercy and mystery. God rewrote with his own finger the tablets of the law. When man breaks the law, only God can mend it again. When Abraham`s seed lost the land, only the Lord could inherit and possess it again. Moshiach is now. Messiah and the Zionist seek the same goal of restoring the land to Abraham and his seed. Messiah also seeks to bring Abraham`s blessing of salvation to the `many nations` of the world. Is this the Zionist`s goal? I pray so.

I agree completely. G-D said if My people, who are called by My name, Will humble themselves and pray, repent and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways. Then will I here from Heaven and heal thier land.

Lack of Candor
I heard David Hartman give a talk on this subject on Shavout night this week at his institute and went far further than this brief summary. In fact, he asserted that God has no active presence in history and that the Jewish people should relinquish its belief in the mythology to the contrary. In other words, a variation on the clockmaker theory of creation. The upshot, don`t bother praying for God`s help or intercession, you are just a foolish believer in mythology. Some inspiration!
