David Hartman, Founding President of the Shalom Hartman Institute, is a leading contemporary Jewish philosopher and internationally renowned author.
David has a doctorate in philosophy from McGill University and was ordained as a rabbi by Yeshiva University where he studied with Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik for many years.

He made aliyah in 1971 with his wife and five children. David Hartman founded the Shalom Hartman Institute in 1976. He received the Avi Chai Prize in 2000 and the Guardian of Jerusalem Prize on Shalom Hartman Institute’s 25th anniversary.
He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from American University in Washington, Yale University, Hebrew Union College, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, and is the recipient of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Samuel Rothberg Prize for Jewish Education.
