| The 2012 Robert P. Kogod Annual Lecture, set for June 26, is titled, "Divided Loyalties: The Problem of ‘Dual Sovereignty’ and Constitutional Faith." The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sanford V. Levinson of University of Texas Law School. The lecture's respondent will be Prof. Suzanne Last Stone, iEngage Fellow at Shalom Hartman Institute and professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University.
The lecture is the one open event of the annual Shalom Hartman Institute International Philosophy Conference, "The Challenges of Sovereignty in a Jewish State," which will occur June 24-27 (4-7 Tammuz 5772). A recording of the lecture will be made available for public consumption following the event.
The conference's theme is explained this way: "The founding of a democratic Jewish State brought to the fore tensions between the various Jewish understandings of the concept of sovereignty and their interaction with contemporary understandings of the concept. In this year's conference we will explore the origin of sovereignty in Jewish canonical texts as well as the dynamic relationship between the king and the judiciary in Jewish tradition, and we will examine the contribution that the philosophical tradition can make to classic Jewish interpretations of sovereignty."
